Media Coursework Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I feel that my finished media product, which is an advert, a radio broadcast and an advert for and television program have all used ideas from real media products and also challenged some of them. Having created a television advert for my main task I had to watch and research many other sports equipment adverts in order to see how the big company’s such as Nike and Adidas go about attracting their target audience. Unlike Nike and Adidas I didn’t have millions of pounds to sponsor players to be in my advert and this is one of the ways I challenged other sport equipment adverts as I used the average player instead of the best player. I believe that this was one of the key areas for my advert as if it worked, which I believe it did, then I would have made a successful advert showing my target audience how they too could achieve their goals by buying into my brand, which is called Target Sports. Unlike most other sports equipment adverts I decided not to use music in mine. By choosing not to use music and instead just show the player doing what he does best I felt that this would show the audience how good the product is as it doesn’t need a catchy tune to make it look better or appeal to people more, it’s that good it will appeal to you anyway.
With Target sports I was aiming to show how buying into my brand was going to make sports players better because they were using my equipment. Using things such as still shots of the logo on the ball is very similar to what big brand company’s do in order to portray the image into would be customer’s heads. Furthermore I also used shots of both of the player’s faces in the penalty situation in my advert. Showing the guy with Target Sports equipment on looking more confident further established my brand as a confidence booster and thus making you a better player. I have watched countless adverts where players look more confident than others to make a brand look better.
However the advert also consisted of many ideas that I had seen from other adverts. For example the very first shot of my main task shows a shot of the logo. All products need to show exactly what they are selling to the audience so by doing this the audience knew that they were watching an advert targeting sport’s oriented people. My advert was similar in length to adverts being no more than thirty seconds and it also met the terms of a normal advert by showing the product logo regularly and by using more technical shots such as shot reverse shot to make the advert look more professional.
How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?
The combination of my main and ancillary tasks has been quite effective but there were also some improvements. I was pleased with the message that all my tasks were sending as they were all attracting the target audience and selling the product to the consumer. However I feel that had I have been able to use photo shop better than I could then I feel my advert for a television program could have been better. I could have designed it better if my skills were better but unfortunately I was unable to do so. I created the logo using photo shop and its shown at the beginning of each advert and also at the end to show the audience exactly what target sports is.
However my ancillary tasks did advertise the product well and would have enabled me to attract a wider audience as they were all different types of media. I also feel that having a number of tasks enabled me to reach out to people of other sports rather than just football as it gave me more chances to advertise to these people. For example I had two adverts so one of them was based on football and the other on rugby. Advertising to Rugby players as well as football player’s meant more customers and thus more profit for the company. Also having many different tasks enabled me to advertise my brand to people who may not here or see it anywhere else. Using television and radio meant that people who didn’t watch television could hear about the brand through radio and vice versa. The message that I was attempting to send out to the audience was made better with the use of synergy. By having more than one advert it meant that I could appeal to a larger amount of people of whom don’t necessarily watch or listen to one type of media. For example having a radio broadcast and a advert on soccer am meant that I was showing my product to two different types of people though two different types of media and thus creating a larger target audience.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
My audience feedback has helped me to learn a huge amount about whether or not my finished products were good enough. Having had a large amount of feedback from friends and family watching it I have gained what I feel is an honest opinion from them. All of them liked the initial idea of Target Sports and felt the shots of the logo were good as it was showing the target audience exactly what they were buying into. They also liked the shot reverse shot used in the middle of my football advert and felt that this showed them a stand of between the player and the goalie and this is what I aimed to do. One viewer of the advert quoted “I liked the stand of between the goalie and the penalty taker as it showed the tension you would get in a real situation on the pitch”.
However some argued that perhaps music could have been used in order to give more affect but this is something I chose not to include as I was trying to create an advert based on the product not what music it had. Furthermore they also felt that the advert for the television program was good as it showed the cross bar challenge which is what soccer am, the programme it was advertising on use and they felt this was a good idea as it would use the programmes ideas to advertise.
The audience feedback has helped me to understand what did and didn’t go well in my tasks and also showed me how some of things I thought had gone well hadn’t in some people’s views. Without the audience giving me feedback I wouldn’t really be able to say how successful my coursework has been as I would only have my own opinion.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
New media technologies have been used in all of my coursework from beginning to end. From basic technology such as the internet to more technical aspects such as photo shop I have used skills I already had and learnt many along the way in order to come out with a final piece.
During the planning and research stages I used the internet to look at adverts on sites such as YouTube which allowed me to see what other adverts do in order to attract their target audience. Also blogger which I used to record all the updates I had on my coursework to keep a record and to use as notes. An online blog site such as blogger is perfect for recording information, uploading work and also getting my teacher to view the work I have done so far.
Furthermore I used technologies such as video cameras and Mac book laptops in order to film and edit. Adobe was the system that I used to edit as it comes out with the best finished piece. Photo shop was used to create a logo for the ball and for Target Sports and this worked effectively as it blended the logo into the ball and made it look like it was already on the ball instead of being drafted in. Some other basic technology was used such as email to talk to my teacher and also word to type up my evaluation. I have benefited with my coursework from the wide range of technology that my school has to offer and this has helped me finish with what I feel is a successful finished piece.

Speaker 1: Are you receiving the results you want from your sports clothes and equipment?
If your like countless others in this country and are fed up of paying over the top prices for poor quality goods then target sports is for you.
Maritn- Well Andy, Smithy is having a great game today, but what's caused this dramatic increase in his performance.
Andy- I agree Martin, I spoke to the guys behind the scenes of the club and they told me that Andy is using Targets Sport's boots instead of his old ones.
Martin- And Smithy beats one, he's beat a second he shoots and scores.
Andy- What a great gold by the lad.
Martin - Well we can see those boots really have done the trick.
Final Whistle
Andy- So Smithy, how did you feel about your winning goal today?
Smithy- It felt great. I am really pleased for the lads and the fans.
Andy- I notice your wearing new boots today. Is that what aided your inspirational performance tonight?
Smithy- Of course. Thats why I choose target sports.
